Skin Care Tip of the Day: You are what you eat. Sweets, which are proinflammatory, may contribute to acne [1] [2]. (In my personal experience, they definitely do.) For clearer skin, avoid chocolate, cookies, cake, sodas, fruit juices, and other proinflammatory foods. Consume anti-inflammatory foods like salmon, whole grain, and oranges. Also, drink plenty of water.

Household Makeup Removers
Yesterday evening. Concealer caked under my eyes. Mascara loaded on my eyelashes. Toss in some thick black eyeliner, glamorous eyeshadow, and loose powder. Rummaging through my product stash for something to remove the makeup. Wait. I own none of that stuff. Time to improvise:
Olive oil as a makeup remover.
Regular cleanser + brown sugar for a scrub.
Witch hazel as a toner.
It worked out well!
If you decide to try these household options, be careful in the region around your eyes.
OTHER OPTIONS:
*makeup remover - jojoba oil, safflower oil, castor oil
*scrub - white sugar + cleanser
*toner - lemon juice or rubbing alcohol (may be drying though)

Naturals Blemish Lighteners
Dark spots and hyperpigmentation are common among people of color. Choosing from the many products available to "even" one's complexion can be a bit overwhelming -- and expensive. Below are some thrifty alternatives that may be worth trying. Realize that this process may take weeks or longer to experience noticeable results:
• Yogurt and Orange Juice
• Honey and Lemon Juice
• Cucumber and Lemon Juice
All recipes found here.
• Lemon Mint Honey and Orange
Recipe found here.
Be sure to use sunscreen in the daytime to minimize repigmentation of your darker regions.
As always, I encourage you to seek a real expert -- your dermatologist -- for other options.
What works for Loo's dark spots? Using lemon juice, brown sugar, or L'Oréal Revitalift Night Cream (the most effective + expensive of the three options).

Hey, Med School: Skin Care, Please?
Our current Healthy Hair Feature also shares her skin routine:
"Wash face 2x's per day. In the morning, I use a moisturizing cleanser with Alpha Hydroxy Acids (like Glycolic Acid or Citric Acid) which everyone in there mid-20's and older should start using now to prevent fine lines and wrinkles and to protect the delicate skin on your face throughout the day. I follow this with a serum containing Vitamin C (more protection) and caffeine (increases the circulation to the face and wakes the skin up!). Lastly, I use a moisturizer with SPF 30; wearing sunblock is the single most important thing you can do now to improve the health of your skin! At night I wash my face with an exfoliating cleanser and I put on a night serum containing Retinol which will further prevent fine lines and wrinkles from appearing."
I can certainly attest to the wonders of a night cream containing retinol; skin renewal and repair after exposure to sun, makeup, etc. is the name of the game. Also, I second the use of a moisturizer containing sunscreen. Dermatologists highly recommend a minimum of SPF 30.

Mixology || 3-Oil Nighttime Facial Moisturizer
So, I've been using this mix for weeks now, and I'm in love. The thought of sleeping with oil on my face initially scared me (e.g., fear of pimples) but quickly went away as I noticed my face was doing just fine.
So, why the 3-oil mix? Well, I wanted to get the researched benefits of avocado oil, olive oil, and grapeseed oil all in one. *smiles* So, without further ado, here is my recipe:
Ingredients:
1 part pure avocado oil (helps heal wounds, improves elasticity)
1 part extra virgin olive oil (decelerates sun damage, potent antioxidant effect)
1 part grapeseed oil (may lighten UV-induced hyper pigmentation, may reduce blackheads and whiteheads)
Instructions:
Mix all ingredients into a spray bottle and use on face after your night time wash.
That is all!

Study, Skin Care || Turmeric for Hyperpigmentation and Wrinkles?
I am subscribed to tons of YouTubers, and one of them is Farah. She has several videos discussing the effectiveness of turmeric against hyperpigmentation. While I have not tried her homemade mixtures, I did view this is an opportunity to find any research on turmeric and hyperpigmentation. What did I find?
SOURCES
- In one study, turmeric demonstrated effectiveness against hyperpigmentation and other UVB-induced skin damage in mice. It specifically prevented the following: an increase in skin thickness, a reduction in skin elasticity, formation of wrinkles, and formation of melanin induced by chronic UVB exposure [1]. The mechanism by which turmeric accomplishes this is believed to be via the "inhibition of increases in metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) expression caused by chronic irradiation".
- Curcumin, an active component of turmeric, "protects skin by quenching free radicals and reducing inflammation through the inhibition of nuclear factor-kappa B [2]".
